Student Blogging Challenge

What’s this challenge about?

The basics of the challenge:

- The challenge is run twice a year beginning March and October for a 10 week period each time.

- It is organized by Miss Sue Wyatt (@tasteach) and help is given by Mrs Sue Waters and her team at Edublogs.

There are three separate sections:

- Educators who would like to mentor a group of students

- Teachers who have a class blog who want to connect with other classes globally

- Individual students who have their own personal blog and want to connect globally with other students

More Details:

- Students, mentors and classes taking part can add a special challenge badge to their blog.

- A twitter hashtag created each year #16stubc

- All blogs must be set to open to the world – the reader doesn’t need a password to leave a comment etc

The Activities Each Week:

- Each week a post is published with a list of activities for students to choose from. You only need to complete one activity each week, but if you want to do more you can.

Examples from previous years

About me – Creating their avatar and about me page so visitors get to know them – includes being digital citizenship and cybersafety

Let’s comment – Teaching what makes a quality comment, how to connect through commenting and again cybersafety and digital citizenship

Using images – Teaches about using creative commons images, giving attribution for images, videos etc, tools for using images in posts

The other weeks of the challenge are based around a topic eg food, games, government, history, maths, nature etc

The final post for the challenge is an evaluation and audit of what they have done over the 10 week period of the challenge.

OK, so you think you might be interested in joining the next set of challenges?

Rubrik's Cubes

For the students who were wondering where I got my Rubrik's cube from, here is the website. The daily deals are normally the best to get. Note: prices are in USD, so convert to NZD to get the correct price. It takes a while for them to come (3 weeks or so), but they are better and 'faster' cubes than the ones you get from the shop (cheaper too).

Remember to always ask a parent if you are keen to buy anything online; safety first.

Title page for WWA

Task: Create a title page with the following information:

Unit Title = Who We Are

Central Idea = Communities reflect the relationships and diversity of their people

Lines of Inquiry
- How knowing my Turangawaewae helps me understand who I am
- How I connect with and contribute to my family and communities
- Our rights and responsibilities as members of communities

Key Concepts
- Connection
- Responsibility

Full Name

Room 14

Discussion: What should the title page look like?

To some extent, this is a matter of personal style. However, there are some general guidelines to follow:

1. Use only one or two fonts. More than two can be confusing to read.

2. Use a clear font that is easy to read.

3. Keep it simple. Too many words or pictures can have a distracting or confusing effect.

4. Keeping all of the lines starting on either the left or right margin is easier to read and creates a stronger visual impression than centered text or random placement. The first example shows the text lined up on the left margin and the second shows the text lined up on the right margin.

5. If you would like to add a graphic (picture), use one that doesn't overpower the text because it is too big, or so small that it isn't clear. Or, you could do a large background graphic in a lighter coloured ink. That would also be attractive and appropriate. Just make sure there is contrast between the background and the words so that the words are readable.
